In December 2024, the MPIL can look back on a hundred years of tradition. Founded in Berlin in 1924, the MPIL has been based in Heidelberg since 1949. As an institution of basic research in international law, European Union law and comparative public law, the Institute and its staff have been involved in many groundbreaking legal developments and have often written legal history.
